Six-time Tony nominee Danny Burstein, the standout star who took a leave from Moulin Rouge! The Musical last month to to repair a torn meniscus, returned to the show at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on January 21. Austin Durant had been playing the role of Harold Zigler during Burstein's leave.
Based on the smash film and featuring popular music of the past 50 years, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris at the turn of the century. The story focuses on an ambitious, lovesick writer named Christian (played by Aaron Tveit) and a dazzling, entrancing chanteuse named Satine (played by Tony winner Karen Olivo). Their lives collide at the Moulin Rouge with its many characters including the host of the Moulin Rouge, Harold Zidler (Burstein); the brilliant, starving artist Toulouse-Lautrec (Tony nominee Sahr Ngaujah); the greatest tango dancer—and gigolo—in all of Paris, Santiago (Ricky Rojas); the tempting Nini (Robyn Hurder); and The Duke of Monroth (Tam Mutu), the wealthy and entitled patron of the club who thinks he can buy anything he wants, including love.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical began previews on June 28 and officially opened on July 25 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
